Hein Kemper (Johann Heinrich Kämper), who was accused of murder, was led from prison to the court of appeal by police on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam during his trial, 20 July 1854. The prisoner is carried through the crowd by an escort of infanty or militia and tarragons on horseback. The triple murderer Kemper was the last person to be sentenced to death.
