Hollands treurtoneel, 1673, anonymous, 1673 - 1674 Canvas Print

Dutch mourning theatre, 1673. Copy no. II after the French cartoon with three representations about the attack on the Republic by the French and Episcopal armies in 1672. In the central performance, justice sits on throne between Louis XIV and the bishop of Munster watches as the French rooster eats the Dutch cheese while the Dutch Lion, handcuffed by an English dog, watches helplessly. The Dutch Virgin sits defeated in a chair and has dropped the bundle of arrows of the seven united provinces. On the right, the cat-oiled church enters Calvin and Luther, on the left the beggars preachers try to flee. On either side two smaller prints. On the left the Dutch Sailor with a cheese in his hands and a candle in his rear. On the right, the Dutch Sailor is bitten by the English dog and French Rooster. With the original captions in Dutch and French.
