Iconoclasm in a Church, Dirck van Delen, 1630 Canvas Print
Depiction of an iconoclasm in a church. In a church interior, statues of saints are pulled from their pedestals and headstones are destroyed. The dramatic scene is watched from behind a pillar on the far left by a cleric in habit. The interior does not go back to an existing structure, but was carefully constructed by Van Delen. The meticulous application of the central perspective, in which all the lines come together in one vanishing point, dominates the performance. In the structure of the composition, Van Delen gave a major role to the effect of the light, which miraculously invades the building from the north.
