Indianenkamp, Hendrik Huygens, after 1849 - before 1851 Canvas Print
At this camp of the Arowakken or Caribbean, the huts are very simple and serve mainly as shelter from sun and rain. The roof of leaves reaches to the ground. The floor is the white sandy soil of the savannah. In the huts there are hammocks. There is a cooking area next to one of the cabins. It is not clear whether Huygens signed members of the tribe of the Arowakken or the Caribbean here. Both belong to the population groups that live at the lower reaches of the rivers, in the coastal region of Suriname. Because these populations are originally nomads, their villages are also called camps, or encampments.
