Ingenuity and Man Carry Good Works / Man Abandoned by His Good Works, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural framing. On the left, the personification of Ingenuity and Man, the personification of Good Works on a bar, carry as if in a procession. Man's faith in Good Works indicates his wickedness. On the right, Man is overcome by personifications of Sin and eternal death, while he is abandoned by the personification of Good Works, dressed as a nun and with the pilgrim attributes of scallop and staff. Under both performances a four-line verse in Lower Dutch and a four-line text in Latin. Number 15 and 16 from a reformatory series about the sinfulness and justification of man.
