Ingenuity and the Penitent Man, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural framing. On the left, the personification of the blind ingenuity, the inadequate human mind, blindfolded and with a burning torch to show Man the way to justification for God. On the right man in the habijt of penitential skills, kneeling in front of an altar with a representation of the Pieta. Man follows his ingenuity to avoid hell and earn heaven by doing good works. Under both performances a four-line verse in Lower Dutch and a four-line text in Latin. Number 9 and 10 from a reformatory series about the sinfulness and justification of man.
