Interior of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam during the inauguration, 1675, Romeyn de Hooghe, 1675 Canvas Print

View of the interior of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam during the inauguration on August 2, 1675. In the middle, on the east-facing teba, the chazan. On the right, the torah scrolls, worn by men and interspersed by men with a torch or a candle, are carried in a procession to the sacred ark (aron hakodesj or hechal). At the top of the middle, the Amsterdam City Maiden and the personification of Freedom of Conscience give a Jewish priest with prayer role and a kneeling woman with legislative tables the freedom to practice their religion. To the left of this is a map of the temple, on the right a face on the outside. On both sides medallions with the names of regents of the synagogue, members of the building commission and persons who performed ceremonies during the inauguration. Here is a separate text sheet with text in 3 columns in Dutch, Portuguese and French and 5 verses in Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew, Latin and French.
