Johanna and the Jewish merchants, Cornelis Troost, 1741 Canvas Print
The 'Spilpenning', scene from the third act, fifth stage, from the play of the same name by Thomas Asselijn: Johanna's pivotal vision is discovered by her husband Gerardus and her father Augustijn, who dressed up as Polish Jewish merchants (Asselijn uses the derogatory term 'smousen' for them in his text). Johanna sits in a room with a ceiling painting at a table full of all kinds of curiosities, Chinese porcelain, figurine and rolls of textiles. On the chair on the left is a ring-tailed lemurs, on the right a cat has crawled under the cupboard.
