Kris of Governor-General Baud, anonymous, 1834 Canvas Print

Kris of Governor-General Baud, anonymous, 1834 Canvas Print

Madurese kris with a wooden handle and inlaid golden inscription on the blade decorated with pamor patterns. The gilding fittings of the wooden sheath are decorated with leaf and flower motifs and a monster head. This probably represents Bonaspati, the terrifying god of the forest. The kris was donated in 1834 by the panembahan (prince) of Pamekasan, Mangkoc Adie Ningrat, to the then governor-general of the Dutch East Indies J.C. Baud (1789-1859). The text on the blade reads: Aan Z:E den Gouv=er Gen=ad=int over. Ned=r Indie J:C:Baud.Downside: Den Pan=m Van Panakassan Mangkoc Adie Ningrat/7e Junuarij+1834.
