Leander and Hero, Hendrick Goltzius, 1580 Canvas Print
In an oval, the myth of Leander and Hero is depicted here. Leander, a boy from Abydus had fallen in love with Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, who lived in Sestus (a city on the European side of the Hellespont). Every night he swam across the strait to visit his beloved Hero in Sestus. During a stormy night, the torch that Hero always lit on a turret of her house always extinguished to guide her lover. As a result, Leander did not find the coast and drowned. The next morning, when Hero saw Leander's corpse lying at the foot of the tower, she threw herself into the sea in sorrow. Goltzius depicted several moments from the story in one engraving. Probably belongs to an oval representation of the history of Pyramus and Thisbe; perhaps this is a medallion that is engraved on two sides.
