Maan, Totoya Hokkei, 1822 Canvas Print
An old man with a fan in his right hand, stands at the bottom of a long staircase. At the top of the stairs is a lady in front of a pavilion. The man is the Chinese emperor Gensô (Hsüang Tsung, 685-762) and the woman his favorite concubine Yôkihi (Yang Kuei-fei, 719-56). Here their encounter in the afterlife is depicted; Yôkihi was executed after she and her family gained too much power. Measure three poems.
