Man Admires Himself and is Blind to the Trinity, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural framing. On the left, Man, dressed in habijt, looks at the rosary in hand, himself in the mirror, in the delusion that his good works will be rewarded. The three crowns on the left symbolize this reward. On the wall are buoys of self-flagellation and indulgences with papal seals. On the right lies Man, above him the Trinity, which takes care of the blinded Man. Beside man the personification of the human Ingenuity. Under both performances a four-line verse in Lower Dutch and a four-line text in Latin. Number 11 and 12 from a reformatory series about the sinfulness and justification of man.
