Man is reborn and destroys his Good Works, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural frame. On the left, Man is baptized in the Spirit by God, who in the form of a man on the clouds imposes Man's hand. Because Man is born again with this, he is naked and has put down his habit. The personifications of Ingenuity and Conscience flee. The personifications of Eternal Death, Disobedience, and Sin lie on the ground by God. On the right, Man strikes his Good Works, in the form of a nun, with a bat. The rosary, scallop and indulgences lie broken and torn on the ground. This representation symbolizes man, who no longer relies on his own good works and strength, but on Christ alone. Among both performances a four-line verse in Low German and a four-line text in Latin. Numbers 19 and 20 from a reformatory series on the sinfulness and justification of man.
