Manumission of the enslaved Christopher, anonymous, 1849 Canvas Print
Document declaring on behalf of the Governor of the colony of Suriname that the young enslaved Christopher 'who is under the age to choose any profession' is granted this letter from Manumissie and on the occasion of this the names Christopher Johannes Gijsbertus Vasse is given. On presentation of the letter, everyone had to recognize Christopher as a free person and let him 'fully enjoy the effect of that'. The letter was signed by the governor's office secretary J.A. Lisman (see portrait RP-F-2011-66) and J. E. Wesenhagen.
