Maps of the Spanish Armada (21 and 22 July 1588), John Pine, 1739 Canvas Print

Two maps (III-IV) with the Spanish and English fleet in the English Channel under the coast of Cornwall and Devon, within an ornamental framework. At the top of the frame is a medallion depicting Charles Howard, Lord High Admiral, flanked by the personifications of Caution, depicted with two faces, and Courage. Between the weaponry of spears and banners a commemorative coin with on one side two ships and on the other hand the coat of arms of Zeeland. Beneath charles howard's portrait, Victoria sits on a cloud. In her right hand she has a laurel wreath and Howard's coat of arms. In her left hand a chain to which are chained the Duke of Medina and other Spanish commanders, listed in the frame below. On the map on the right a sea god or Triton blowing on a shell. A woman with a fish tail points to Howard's gun in his hands. On the other hand, a boy on a fish carries the banner with the coat of arms of the English Queen Elizabeth I. The performance is part of a book about the Spanish Armada and the carpets that were made on it on behalf of Charles Howard.
