Maps of the Spanish Armada (22 and 24 July 1588), John Pine, 1739 Canvas Print
Two maps (V-VI) with the Spanish and English fleets in the English Channel near the Isle of Portland and Weymouth, within an ornamental framework. At the top of the frame a cartouche with the portrait of Francis Drake. Between the anchors, spears and banners a commemorative coin with three ships on one side and the coat of arms of Zeeland on the other. At the bottom left a coin depicting Queen Elizabeth I in a triumphal chariot, with palm branch and a book with the first words of the Lord's Prayer in Dutch. On the reverse of the coin, pictured on the right, is a tree with a bird's nest in the branches. The birds defend themselves against a bird of prey in the air. In the middle, Francis Drake hands out money to his crew from a captured galleon. In addition, the prisoners are discharged. The performance is part of a book about the Spanish Armada and the carpets that were commissioned by Charles Howard.
