Memorial to Isaac Scholten, Walraad Nieuwhoff, 1818 - 1820 Canvas Print

A memorial to Isaac Scholten, Restored Evangelical Lutheran preacher in Amsterdam, who died in 1818. Scholten's portrait is placed on the column and the base shows a plaque with a seven-line text in Dutch. The monument is flanked by the Faith with a book on her lap and in her hand a writing spring and by the grieving Religion. A putto shows the image of a church interior. On the ground lie the extinguished and broken torch and an hourglass as a sign of death. To the left in the background are two figures between corn sheaves, one of which points upwards to the sunlight. The bound sheaves indicate the Last Judgment, in which God will reap the seed or his Word that has fallen into good soil, according to the likeness of the sower.
