Men haori with the old cormorant fisherman from 'Ukai', anonymous, 1920 - 1940 Canvas Print
Haori for a man with a decoration on the liner of a rectangular representation of an old man in a boat fishing at night with cormorants, a basket and a fire pit in the boat, against a background of a silhouetted representation of hills and a man fishing with cormorants in a boat. Text on the rectangle. The fish (usually ayu) are attracted to the fire, the cormorants on a leash are prevented from swallowing the fish with an iron ring around the neck. This image and text probably refer to the No-theatre play Ukai (The Cormorant Fisherman), in which two monks meet an old cormorant fisherman near the Isawa River, who turns out to be a ghost. Dark gray silk with brocade woven decoration.
