Mercury and Battus, Hendrick Goltzius (workshop of), 1728 Canvas Print
Apollo, depicted as a shepherd, plays his pan flute and pays no attention to his flock. Mercury, recognizable by his winged sandals, has cunningly drove the flock away. The old man Battus promised Mercury not to say anything about what he had seen. When Mercury asked him about it in a different guise, Battus said it anyway, turning him into a rock. Two lines of verse in Latin below the performance. The print is part of an album.
