Minister Johan Willem Alberda (1877-1957, centre) in conversation with Mr. E.F.M.J. baron Michiels van Verduynen, minister without portfolio. Verduynen was able to replace the Foreign Minister if he stayed abroad. Alberda became one of the first SDAP ministers in 1939. De Fries became Minister of Water Management in the Cabinet De Geer II. Shortly afterwards, the Germans occupied the Netherlands and Alberda fled to England with the Dutch government. During the war, Alberda participated in the London cabinets led by Pieter Gerbrandy. On the left of the picture is Minister Kerstens. The line net was created by artist Cor Visser.
