Model for the tomb of Maerten Harpertsz Tromp, Rombout Verhulst, 1654 Canvas Print
The sketch, a raised relief, has in the middle a pedestal, on which a large urn with lid. Over it hang garlands of laurel leaves, on which a brush and two crowned coats of arms hang with ribbons, each held by a naked boy standing next to the pedestal. In the background on either side of the urn, four winged putti emerge from the rushes half hidden from the rushes, three of whom blow on shales and one of whom, while singing, puts the ship's crown on the lid of the urn. Above floats a fifth putto, which with both hands holds a spell band in front of sight for the (missing) text. His head touches the bottom edge of a table in quabornament and is located between two fesses with ribbons and drooping tassels composed of various types of shells, leaves and seaweed. At the bottom against the pedestal two cannonballs and a Roman shield decorated with lightning bolts and an indefinable object, as well as some enterpies and an enter axe. On the left are two flagpoles with flags hanging down against an affuit, on the right on a cannon barrel a tournament helmet. The shields show climbing lions to the left, respectively the coat of arms of the States General and that of the States of Holland and West Friesland. The model, the figure of Tromp, placed on a wooden board, lies in full armor with his legs stretched to the right on the flag, which leaves part of the rudder under his knees uncovered, as well as part of the two cannons, on which he rests with the left shoulder and head; his face is directed at the viewer for a moment. Between the fingers of the left hand he holds the ribbon with the medal of Frederick Henry, the right one includes the command staff. Tromp wears a harness and "leather" shoes with rectangular noses and a flat collar, which is closed with a cord with spikes; a sash is tied around the right arm. The wooden frame is formed from an architrave, placed on two pillars with deep-set panels, each decorated with a fesen, consisting of different types of shells and coral, which is attached to a rosette with a ribbon. Both consoles, on which the outstretched figure of Tromp rests, are S-volutes, decorated at the front with an acanthus leaf and on the sides with a leaf motif. The panel between the consoles has a fession of shells, fixed with a ribbon with two rosettes.
