Model of a Dry Dock, Rijkswerf Willemsoord, 1866 Canvas Print

Model of willemsoord dry dock, on a ground shelf. The ground shelf shows the composition of the wooden raft on which the dock was built. The dock has an elongated oval shape and a metal ship door with a keel. At the entrance, four pipes run upwards from the bottom through one of the sides; as a result, the water was drained with pumps when the dock was pumped out. The ship door has double skin up to two-thirds of the height; the inner caisson is divided into four compartments. Each compartment has a mechanical pump, a spout tap and two sheaves that connect it to the neighboring compartments. There are two hand pumps for the space between the double skin. The mechanical pumps are connected at the top to a single drive mechanism, which must be driven by a steam engine; they all connect to two pipes, which lead on either side outside the ship's door. Two square channels, which are closed with a spout in the middle, run right through the ship's door, operated with a winch inside: these channels are not connected to the inside of the ship's door, but only allow water in or out of the dry dock. There are no inlets in the outer skin of the ship's door, but these can be observed on the drawings. On top, the ship's door is closed with a wooden deck.
