Model of a Pair of Hydraulic Forge Bellows, Rijkswerf Rotterdam, c. 1800 - c. 1815 Canvas Print
Model of a hydraulic bellows on the ground shelf. It consists of a vessel that is suspended horizontally in two forks and can be turned back and forth by means of a lever a quarter circle around its axis. The space inside has been transformed by a tube in the axis direction into an endless circle, which is made finite again by a shot placed in the longitudinal direction between the outer and inner wall on top of the tube. On one side, on both sides of this bulkhead, an inbound valve with chamois leather valve is fitted, on the other side outgoing valves, to which a ventilation pipe is connected. If the vessel is now half filled with water, the space left for air is divided into two compartments: by turning the vessel back and forth, they alternately become larger and smaller, because the water surface remains horizontal. This is how the air flow is created. The ventilation pipe is curved so that the end is flush with the rotation axis, and connects to a fixed pipe in a wall behind the bellows. In the floor between barrel and wall, a double water tank is arranged: one part is closed from above and connected to the other by a slot at the bottom of the bulkhead; the closed part is connected to the ventilation pipe with a vertical pipe.
