Model of a submarine, Antoine Lipkens, Olke Uhlenbeck, 1835 - 1840 Canvas Print
Copper model of a submarine on a wooden stand, with a separate wooden box with tools. Teardrop-shaped trunk with flat edge around it, on which a sealing. The upper dome has a number of lights, a cockpit and a waterproof manhole; inside is a compartment for the mechanics and the drivers; this compartment can be lifted out, so that the dive tank underneath becomes visible. Propulsion is carried out by hand: with a crank, cogwheel and a flywheel on either side, centrifugal pumps are driven, which propel the water backwards through nozzles. The dive tank is filled by means of a large valve in the middle, while the air is fed through two valves to the upper compartment; they serve as an overflow at the same time. In the dive tank there are four separate floating tanks and lead ballast in the front. The dive tank is emptied with two pumps, which are driven with the same cranks as for propulsion; by pumping the air back from the upper compartment, the water is worked outwards through the same opening as it was permitted. The keel, which is weighted with lead ballast, can be repelled: the vessel then floats to the surface and the keel is hoisted again by means of two winches. Large rectangular rudder, which is operated from the inside with a horizontal steering wheel. The independently driven centrifugal pumps offer an additional control option. Vertical steering is done by shifting movable weights inside, which run along the side with wheels on rails and are moved by means of winches and ropes. A small compass is fitted for navigation. A four-armed dredge is hung at the bottom of the bow. Scale 1:10.
