Model of an 80-Pounder Shell Gun on a Pivot on a Ship Deck, Rijkswerf Vlissingen, 1839 Canvas Print

Model of an 80-pound bomb gun on swivel sled, painted black. The wooden barrel is 55 cm long, has a caliber of 44 mm and fittings for a visor at the tromp and at the tapband; zundgat with lock lift, grape as trouser ring. The upper sled, narrowing slightly forward, has two cheeks with three stages, the upper pieces of which with the tapping pans are made of solid brass. The cheeks are connected by an oblique calf, a crossbar in the middle and the ash bodies; the soleplate lies on the crossbar and the rear axle body. The axle bodies have no wheels, but slide over the brass-clad layers of the bottom drawer. Small wheels have been installed at the front of the cheeks, on which the top sled only rests when the jack with wheels has been raised behind. Around the ends of the rear axle body, brackets have been fitted that reach around an outstanding edge of the shelves of the bottom sled: these brackets secure top slide to bottom sled, but can also be tightened, causing them to act as a friction brake. The bottom slide consists of two longitudinal layers over which the top slide slides, and a longitudinal trailer in the middle with a hole for the swirl bolt and brass rails for the wheels of the jack; the three layers are connected by three crossbars, all of which are wheeled in the corners. The bottom sled is extended with loose pieces at the back. Scale 1:5 (derived).
