Model of an 80-Pounder Shell Pivot Gun on a Ship Deck, Rijkswerf Vlissingen, 1839 Canvas Print
Model of an 80-pound bomb cannon on sled, painted black, on a ground shelf representing the aft deck of a cog ship. The wooden barrel is 55 cm long, has a caliber of 44 mm and fittings for a visor at the tromp and at the tap belt; zundgat with closing oddity, grape as a trouser ring. The upper carriage, slightly narrowing forward, has two cheeks with three steps, the tops of which are solid brass with the tap pans. The cheeks are connected by an oblique calf, a crossbar in the middle and the ash bodies; the soleplate is located on the crossbar and the rear axle body. The axle bodies have no wheels, but glide over the brass-clad shelves of the underlay. Small wheels are placed on the front of the cheeks, but the upper carriage is only supported when the jack with wheels is raised at the back. Around the ends of the rear axle body are brackets that reach around an outstanding edge of the layers of the lower carriage: these brackets secure the upper carriage to the lower carriage, but can also be tightened, making them act as a friction brake. The lower carriage consists of two longitudinal layers over which the upper carriage glides, and a longitudinal layer in the middle with a slot for the vertebral bolt and brass rails for the wheels of the jack; the three layers are connected by three crossbars, all of which are equipped with rollers in the corners. The ground shelf, representing the aft deck of a elliptical vessel with an elliptical fence, has a board of trap gates. A large turning circle is installed in the deck, but the piece can also rotate around two points in the sides. Scale 1:5 (derived).
