Model of Two Congreve Rockets with Launching Gear, Rijkswerf Rotterdam, 1818 Canvas Print

Model of two fire rockets designed by Congreve on a launcher or chair, for use on land. The missiles themselves consist of a pointed cylinder, the tip of which is the incendiary bomb and the rear part the rocket engine; on the outside of the cylinder a long stabilization pole is attached. The chair consists of a ladder-shaped frame that together with two legs forms a tripod; at the front of the frame is a a walking ring, which can be beaten around the front mast of a sloop and there guides the movement of the frame when hoeding and lowering for aiming and loading. On each leg of the frame is a beam with a metal chamber and flint lock mounted with a set of brackets. The flint locks have tractors with holes for a tractor rope. The head of the rocket is placed under two brackets in the chamber. The spark of the flint lock is ricoched off in the chamber by a plate to get into the back of the rocket. This model is equipped with two wick sticks: one for a single wick with a round bracket at the end, the other with forked end for two wicks for simultaneous firing, and with a point at the lower end.
