Pair of flintlock pistols, Leonardus Graeff, c. 1680 Canvas Print
Part of a couple. The tail of the lock plate is embossed with acanthus leaves; the lock plate is signed. The blued barrel is decorated with gold-encrusted arabesques, Classical warriors and a sitting man (emperor?) in gown under a ramhead, flanked by putti and surrounded by leafy vines; the barrel is stamped at the bottom with a mark similar to a globe with a cross or three-leaf. The stock bud is separated from the solid ivory stock by means of a band of gilded silver in the form of a knotted festoon; the stock is embossed, with a grotesque mask, a curly acanthus leaf and beaded edges; The stock button is cut all around like the head of a Classic, mustned warrior wearing a gold-plated silver helmet with chin straps, decorated with separately applied silver leaf vines, a grotesque mask at the back and on top of a three-dimensional silver lizard. The fitting is made of gilt silver and consists of a drawer cap, two embossed loading rack sleeves, and a trigger bracket with separately applied, ajour-carved silver arabesques; no screw plate, the flask cap is shaped like a helmet; the ivory charging stick is equipped with a gilded silver hood.
