Panorama van Hottentots Holland, Jan Brandes, 1787 Canvas Print
Brandes produced this work when he stayed at the Vergenoegd farm: part of the farm can be seen, namely the stone fence and a sundial. In the background the Cape mountains (Hottentots Holland Mountains) are shown, in the middle you can see the gorge and the red earth of this passage. On the far right is the Valsbaai, on the far left the town of Stellenbosch (names are written above it by Brandes). In the foreground are two farmers talking, in the company of a dog. Behind it are two workers and on the left two figures on a horse and carriage. The vast fertile landscape, which was called Hottentots Holland by the peasant colonists, is filled with grazing cattle. On the left side of the landscape are also two farms, probably Meerlust and Gedult.
