During the Second World War, the staff of the Dutch Navy was based in London under the leadership of Admiral Furstner (1887-1970). On 14 May 1940 Vice-Admiral Johannes Theodorus Furstner left the Netherlands for London. On 19 May he was appointed commander of the Dutch naval and naval air forces that were in Allied territory. In fact, the commander was only involved in personnel policy, administration, organization, maintenance and new construction. The operational leadership lay with the English Royal Navy. On July 27, 1941, Furnster became minister of the navy in the war cabinet and commander. On February 23, 1945, J.M. de Booy became Minister of the Navy and Shipping. Furstner remained the commander.
