Portrait of Frederik de Vries, Hendrick Goltzius, 1597 Canvas Print
Frederik de Vries (gest. 1613) was entrusted to the care of Goltzius by his father, the painter Dirck de Vries. Goltzius made a portrait of the boy together with a dog, and sent it to Frederick's father, who was staying in Venice. The hunting dog, often drawn by Goltzius, was his own pet. The caption of Petrus Scriverius speaks about the simplicity of the child and the loyalty of the dog.
