Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704) was a versatile man: bishop, famous chancellor and polemicist and an influential ecclesiastical politician under Louis XIV. Hyacinthe Rigaud painted his portrait as bishop in full reginate in 1702. Drevet's portrait, mirrored by the painting, is considered a masterpiece of the engraver, who was named 'engraver du roi' in 1729.
