Portrait of Louis XIV (1638-1715), King of France and Navarre, Martin Desjardins, before 1749 Canvas Print
A slightly smaller than life-size portrait of Louis XIV in patinated bronze, on red marble square foot. The face is slightly to the right (heraldic left) accustomed. The monarch wears a contemporary and imposing 'in folio' wig, and an all'antica kuras in Roman style, with half visible from behind the drapery the radiant sun – referring to Apollo – as the monarchical emblem of the Sun King. At the arm-on, two rows of lambrequins and a pleated sleeve are visible. On the lambrequins there are engraved fleurs-de-lys. On the right shoulder, the drapery, which acts as a masking of the breast cut, is held with a rosette-shaped bud. The back of the bust is open, with the exception of the back of the head. The whole shows a high degree of finish and detailing, which demonstrates that the bronze is very carefully modeled in the wax and after casting is cimated.
