Portrait of Máximo, 1857, anonymous, 1857 Canvas Print
Portrait of Máximo, one of the so-called 'Aztec children' (two alleged Mexican children with microcephaly), who travelled through Europe as a circus attraction and were shown for a few days in Amsterdam in Amsterdam in Room Apollo in May and June 1857. Máximo was actually born in El Salvador and, through a Spanish trader, together with his sister Bartola, ended up with William J. Morris, a 'showman' who made a living from exhibiting the children.
