Preparation of the Christian soldier for the spiritual battle, Abraham Bosse, c. 1630 Canvas Print
The Christian soldier in the middle is flanked by the allegorical figures Divine Inspiration (Inspiration Divine) and Faith (la Foy). He tramples evil in the form of a snake. The soldier stands in a landscape where on the left an angel plays an organ with Christ with the cross on a cloud above it in the sky. On the right, a devil, who symbolizes seduction, plays an organ. Behind the soldier there are two paths. The path on the left, entitled 'Sentier de Vie' walked by the allegorical figures Justice (Justee), Charity (Charite) and Hope (Esperance) leads to Christ in heaven. The path on the right, entitled 'Chemin de la mort' is walked by the Lust (la Chair), Trots (L'orgeuil) and Complacency (L'ennuie), leads to hell.
