Riding Coat of Ernst Casimir I, anonymous, in or before 1632 Canvas Print
Equestrian cloak of grey wool with a standing collar and shoulder flaps, decorated with buttons and buttonholes made of metal wire, probably worn by Ernst Casimir during the siege of Roermond. Model: very spacious jacket, which can be worn as a cape or as a jacket with wide sleeves. The jacket consists of two front, two rear and two side panels, all - with the exception of the back parts - closing with buttons and buttonholes. The closure in the middle front has 52 buttonholes, those in the beingads 40. The buttonholes are festoned with linen or cotton. Under the buttons there is a topping of coarsely woven linen, while at the buttonholes an additional topping of impregnated coarsely woven linen is applied. All buildings are cut around at the hem. The jacket is - entirely according to the fashion of the time - on the chest up to the sleeve holes form-fitting and from there wide-fitting cut. The material is a very densely woven woolen fabric in ripsbinding; all buildings are cut in the walking direction. The fabric width (max. 71.0 cm) was not sufficient for the flared sleeves, because there is a small wedge of the same fabric at the front at the hem. The standing board has been restored in the past and no longer in its original condition. Lining of rather coarse, double-sided roughened woolen fabric in linen binding. The lining fabric has all kinds of irregular small holes. According to the restoration report by Karin van Nes from 1979, the lining fabric was pale green and originally light green. The jacket and lining are once in the past to have been wet, so that the lining has shrunk relative to the jacket. Decoration: the shoulder flaps consist of ten double-beaten fabric parts, which are connected to each other by means of three flat cords of braided metal wire superseded. These loose 'valves' are reinforced with a black, coarse and impregnated fabric and partially lined with wool. The buttonholes are decorated at the ends with a cord of twined metal wire, which runs along the entire front part. The knots have a wooden core around which bands of twined metal threads are braided. All used metal wires have a silk core.
