Saint Augustine, anonymous, c. 1500 Canvas Print
He sits to the left on an armchair, whose handrail ends in a lion's head with a scroll in the muzzle. On the right arm he holds a book with the city of Hippo Regius on top, in the left another part of the curve, which is partially hidden under the sudarium. He wears a mitre, on which the fanones depend on the shoulders, a choir cap, which is closed with a pectoral for the chest, albe, amict and gloves, over which rings are pushed. Mitre and aurifrisiae show (imitation) gemstones. The walled city, to which two gates give access, consists largely of churches with towers, in which bells hang. Above the city a cherub from whose mouth shines and shoots an arrow.
