Seduction of man, Hieronymus Wierix, 1578 Canvas Print

Allegory on the vanity of man. A (Vanitas) lies on a four-poster bed, she is watched by Unchastity (Impudicitia), a satyr who takes the sheet off her and makes a plumb commute near her pubic area. Beneath her feet lie attributes of science and martial arts. Under her pillow lie earthly riches that fall off the bed and disappear through a hole in the floor. The bed is decorated with warning scenes from the Old Testament: on the left Solomon's idolatry and on the right Delilah cutting off Samson's hair. On the far left is a man, the Worldly Man (Mundanus Homo), who is exposed to the seductive in the room. Next to him the Impermanent Lust (Peritura Voluptas) and Momentary Joy (Brevis Laetitia). On the far right the Physical Lust (Caro), she holds a rope in her hand that is tied to a trapdoor on which the man stands. The performance is clarified in the Dutch, French and German captions in the margins.
