Siege of Breda, 27 August 1624-5 June 1625, Jacques Callot, 1628 Canvas Print
Presentation of the siege of the city of Breda in the years 1624 and 1625 by the Spaniards led by Ambrogio Spinola, on 6 sheets. Central is a map of the besieged city, surrounded by siege works and encampments. On the middle plan, right under Breda, a tented camp. On the middle plan and the foreground on the right the Spanish army on the way. In the foreground on the left and center a village looted by soldiers. At the very front left some soldiers and engineers. At the far front right captain Spinola on horseback. Top left the coat of arms of King Philip IV of Spain. At the top right the coat of arms of Isabella Clara Eugenia, governor of the Netherlands. In the middle of ambrogio spinola's coat of arms. To the performance an ornamental edge. The multilingual legend that accompanies this print, as witnessed by the numbers here and there in the performance, has been lost, but would have fitted either left and right (1st edition 1st state), or top and bottom (2nd edition 1st state) to the image.
