Sleeping peddler robbed by monkeys, Pieter van der Borcht (I), after 1562 - 1608 Canvas Print
When a market stallholder is sleeping under a tree, he is robbed by a group of monkeys. His merchandise is sold in the background to a monkey family (this time dressed as civilians). The monkeys also soil his hat and boots. In the right corner, a bespectacled monkey looks at himself in a mirror. Both the glasses and the mirror stand for deception and (attempted) self-knowledge.
