A soldier on guard, feet out, to the right, holding a musket (a certain type of firearm) with his left hand at the fork of the furket (musket fork) on which the barrel rests (no. 41), c. 1600. With his right hand, he presses a burning fuse on the rooster (part of the ignition mechanism) of his musket. Plate 41 in the instructions for handling the musket: Shorte instruction for the figures, so much concerneth the right use of muskett.
