A soldier on guard, at his feet, to the right, who holds a musket (a certain type of firearm) with his left hand at the fork of the furket (musket fork) on which the barrel rests (no. 40), ca. 1600. With his right hand he brings a burning fuse to his mouth to blow it clean. Plate 40 in the instructions for handling the musket: Corte onderrechtinghe on the figuerlicke afbeeldinghe, so much aengaet the right ghebruyck of Musquet.
