Tantalus, Giulio Sanuto, c. 1565 Canvas Print
Tantalus, sitting on a rock in the water, with one hand leaning on a second stone in the water, reaching with the other hand to the apples hanging above his head from the apple tree. Against the stone on which he sits crawls a snake. In the background burning buildings and demons (hell?) and Charon who sails people in a boat to Hades. The front half of the sea has subsided. (Tantalus torment: he can never pick the fruits and never drink the water). Left under two lines caption in Latin.
