The CatConcert, Johann Theodor de Bry, 1596 Canvas Print
In the middle is a clavichord in which cats and dogs are locked. The instrument is "played" by strumming on their paws and pulling on their tails. The jester next to the fantasy instrument is still tuning his lute. The singer keeps his music magazine upside down, so that readers can see that a four-part song is being sung. In contrast to the musical company that de Bry showed earlier in his series (no.7), this is not about the lofty harmony, but about the dissonance in the music. This form of "tone" probably refers to the disharmonious, "diabolical" sounds produced by itinerant musicians, who were badly regarded as drinking and pot-eating people.
