The Judgement of Junius Brutus, Artus Quellinus (I), 1651 Canvas Print
In the middle of the foreground, three-quarters kneels to the left of Brutus' youngest son with his hands on his back in anticipation of the axe blow, which the executioner standing behind him will inflict on him. This, completely naked and with the back three-quarters to the viewer, holds the axe with both hands above the head. On the far left Brutus' tunic and bar, head-on, standing on the right leg and with the left sideways. He holds the right arm in front of the chest, the departed face to the right and the outstretched left arm enforcing it to the executioner as a sign that the verdict can be carried out. Before him lies the decapitated body of his eldest son; behind him is a dog. In the background the torsion of a convict with tied wrists opposite a fourth, led to execution by a Roman soldier, who pushes his head down. To the right and left of the executioner two boys, one of whom wears his cloak and the other with the folded hands in front of his eyes has burst into tears. On the far right the profile and shoulder of a spectator. Only the knees and arms of jupiter sitting in the background are vaguely visible above the heads. On the relief here and there horizontal and vertical grooves for transmission.
