The life wheel, Monogrammist AI (16th century) (possibly), 1558 Canvas Print

Allegory of the vicissitudes and transience of the life course of man. On a lying wheel in a landscape, the four phases of man's life are depicted: a naked child with flowers (childhood); a young man with a falcon (youth), a middle-aged man with a fluff ball (adulthood), and a grey-beard leaning on a stick with a rolling candle and a rosary in hand (old age). All figures have wings on the feet. On the axis of the wheel is the winged Death with arrow and hourglass on a globe. Above it, on a cloud, christ is enthroned as judge at the Last Judgment. The biblical texts in the representation relate to the unexpected arrival of death and the fact that man must be aware of this. The prose text below the performance explains and comments on it. Print is printed from two blocks on two sheets of paper, attached to each other.
