The Reis Effendi, Head of the Chancery, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, c. 1727 - c. 1730 Canvas Print

The head of the chancellery and second lieutenant of the Grand Vizier, sitting on the floor behind his writing desk, surrounded by papers. From August 2, 1718 until the uprising of Patrona Halil in September 1730, Üçanbarli Mehmed Efendi was in office as the Journey Efendi. He was considered one of the greatest scholars of his time and there are relatively many biographical data known about him. He was born in Istanbul in 1673 or 1674 and died in August or September of the year 1732. In the portrait that Vanmour made of him, he is probably about 57 years old. His nickname was Üçanbarli, which means 'the three warehouses' and refers to his possessions.
