The Righteous Man Tested and the Death of Man, Frans Huys, 1546 - 1562 Canvas Print
Two biblical allegories in architectural framing. Left Man, helped by the personifications of Faith, with cross and chalice, Hope, pointing up, and Patience. The personification of Persecution, with a sword, is held back by Patience. Man is pulled by his leg by the Old Adam, his old sinful nature. On the right, Man dies the Lovely Death, standing behind him as a skeleton with scy the scyper. Next to Man is a preacher who reads him from the Gospel. In the foreground, a coffin. The performance depicts how man is preserved by faith. Under both performances a four-line verse in Lower Dutch and a four-line text in Latin. Number 23 and 24 from a reformatory series about the sinfulness and justification of man.
