The Ship of State, 1620, François Schillemans, 1620 Canvas Print
The Ship of State. Allegory on the happy state of the country after the Synod of Dordrecht, 1620. The Ship of State sails in calm water, with on board the seven provincial maidens and personifications of virtues. Prince Maurits and Justice are at the helm. In the water, catholics and personifications of vices struggle. In heaven, peoples of the world, including Native Americans, Africans, and men with turbans, are blinded by the radiant light of the naked Truth with a Bible. At the top of the title, the verses cut left, right and bottom (tracks visible).
