Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel and his wife Alatheia Talbot, Lucas Vorsterman (I), 1635 - 1675 Canvas Print
The portrait of the Count of Arundel and his wife is nicknamed 'the Madagascar portrait'. The count points to a globe to the island of Madagascar, to which he had planned an expedition. The passer and the astrolabe, which holds the Countess, also refer to her husband's never-performed journey. Arundel was one of the first great collectors in England of paintings and antique sculptures, gemstones and gems. The marble bust of the Greek poet on the right and the head behind it bear witness to his famous collection.
